Noida: Greater Noida Authority will construct a Rs 12.8-crore hockey stadium at its 10-acre zonal sports complex in Sector 37, with work set to begin on May 29. The stadium with world-class hockey turf is likely to be ready in nine months. The Authority said the e-tendering process has been completed and the contract awarded. The stadium, to come up on approximately 1.5 acres within the complex, is part of the first phase of sports infrastructure development at the site, which is also proposed to host a skateboarding rink. The district currently lacks a hockey facility compliant with international standards, forcing players to travel to other cities for competitive tournaments and high-level training. The new stadium is intended to enable Greater Noida to host national and international hockey events. The nearest facility is Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium near India Gate in New Delhi, which hosted the 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup, followed by Shivaji Hockey Stadium in Connaught Place, which has synthetic surfaces used by national and club teams for training. Delhi Development Authority sports complexes provide additional options, but the commute remains a significant burden for players from Greater Noida and surrounding areas.Officials said the Sector 37 hockey stadium would serve not only urban residents but also players from villages, who would gain access to high-level practice, training and competition facilities once the complex was operational.
