Pune: Kumar Saptarshi, socialist thinker, former MLA and founder of Yuvak Kranti Dal, passed away in the city on Saturday. He was 82.The president of the Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Saptarshi followed Gandhian principles throughout his life. He remained actively involved in social movements for several decades, leading and participating in numerous agitations on issues ranging from social justice to democratic rights.After completing his MBBS degree, Saptarshi chose a life of full-time social service. In 1967, he founded the Yuvak Kranti Dal, a youth-based socio-political movement, and devoted himself to public causes for many years. He travelled extensively across the country, taking part in protests and studying local communities and their concerns.In 1978, Saptarshi was elected to the Maharashtra legislative assembly from the Ahmednagar (now Ahilyanagar) constituency on a Janata Party ticket. He also made significant contributions to the education sector, helping establish several colleges and educational institutions.An accomplished writer, Saptarshi authored more than 11 books and served as editor of the Satyagrahi magazine. He also contributed regularly to various periodicals and publications. His lifelong service to society earned him several awards and recognitions.Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal described Saptarshi as a progressive thinker whose death was a major loss for the state. “He consistently fought for democratic values and the rights of deprived sections of society. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, he led several movements throughout his life,” Sapkal said.Deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar said Saptarshi’s writings and speeches inspired generations of young people. “His relentless struggle for social justice and the upliftment of the underprivileged will always be remembered,” she said.
