Gorakhpur: A 22-year-old woman allegedly consumed phenyl inside the Chauri Chaura police station in Gorakhpur on Saturday evening, insisting that police arrange her marriage with her jailed lover.Ironically, the same woman had lodged an FIR against the man, Dhananjay Nishad (25), on July 23, accusing him of sexually exploiting her for three years on the pretext of marriage. She alleged that when she pressed him to marry her, he refused, citing that they belonged to different communities. Acting on her complaint, police arrested Nishad on July 24 and produced him before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

A resident of the Mahuadih area in Deoria district, the woman reached the Chauri Chaura police station on Saturday and demanded that police arrange her marriage to Nishad. Despite repeated attempts by police personnel to counsel her, she remained adamant. She allegedly consumed phenyl, which she had carried in her bag, and collapsed inside the police station.Women police personnel immediately rushed her to the Community Health Centre in Chauri Chaura. After providing primary treatment, doctors referred her to the district hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable. Her family members later reached the hospital.SP (North) Gyanendra Singh said Nishad had been arrested following due legal procedure on the basis of the woman’s complaint, while she was immediately provided medical treatment after the incident. He said her condition is now normal.
