Ahmedabad: A 34-year-old dealer of used cars from Kadi and his wife were allegedly cheated of Rs 28 lakh by a travel agent who promised to arrange jobs and work permits for them in Finland. Sola police registered a complaint against the agent for allegedly taking the couple to Mumbai repeatedly for the process, handing them forged offer letters and not refunding their money after failing to obtain visas.The complainant told police that a neighbour had introduced them to the accused who ran his business from Ahmedabad. He collected their passports, Aadhaar and PAN card copies and allegedly demanded an initial payment of Rs 9 lakh. After handing them ‘offer letters’, he demanded Rs 10 lakh for work permits and passport formalities. The couple paid the amount in cash.The accused later allegedly sent purported copies of Finland visas through WhatsApp and asked the couple to undergo medical tests. After their medical examination, he allegedly demanded another Rs 9 lakh, claiming their work permits had arrived and air tickets would be booked after this payment was made.The accused then allegedly sent them flight details for Jan 30, 2026, and asked them to travel to Mumbai. When they reached Mumbai, he allegedly claimed that their tickets had been cancelled.The couple were allegedly taken to Mumbai twice more on different dates on the promise of travel to Finland. During the final trip, the accused handed their passports back at Mumbai airport, where the couple found no visa had been issued. The accused failed to refund the money.
