Kolkata: The traffic department is preparing to introduce real-time information displays to alert motorists about congestion on Maa flyover before they take the elevated corridor from either end.Multiple portable variable message signs (PVMS) will be positioned at strategic locations, including Circus Avenue, Gopal Mukherjee Road and E M Bypass, from this Monday and will carry real-time alerts about the traffic situation ahead.“Messages like ‘Vehicle breakdown ahead’ will pop up on the screen to alert motorists before they take the flyover. Once the road is free of congestion, the display board will show ‘Road Clear’,” an officer said.Additionally, Kolkata Police has doubled the number of cuts in the median divider on Maa to help tow vehicles that break down faster and ease congestion.“The primary reason behind traffic congestion on Maa flyover is car breakdown,” said Kolkata Police deputy commissioner (traffic) Sambhav Jain.Cops said the number of cuts has been increased from three to six, allowing tow trucks to reach a stranded vehicle from the nearest opening. Police said the new openings would not be available for regular motorists. “The cuts will be sealed with guard rails and will be used only to tow broken-down vehicles. They will not be used for taking U-turns,” said an officer.
