Dibrugarh: Charaideo district unit of the Aasu on Monday staged a sit-in demonstration at Sonari, highlighting a slew of pending administrative and infrastructure-related issues. The protest was led by district president Dipankar Sahu and general secretary Mrinmoy Bora, and drew a large turnout.A key demand was demarcation of Charaideo’s boundary with Sivasagar. Though Charaideo was carved out of Sivasagar in Aug 2015, several stretches of the inter-district boundary remain undefined, Aasu said.“Even after all these years, the boundary has not been properly demarcated, leading to confusion and disputes in border areas. The govt must settle the issue through a proper survey,” Sahu said. The students’ body also sought resolution of interstate boundary disputes. Charaideo shares a 35-km boundary with Nagaland and a 27-km stretch with Arunachal Pradesh.Another demand was improvement of tourist facilities at and around Charaideo Moidam, which was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2024. AASU alleged that amenities for visitors remain inadequate, and called for stronger protection of historical sites and relics across the district to prevent neglect and encroachment. The organisation further demanded immediate filling up of vacant teaching and non-teaching posts in schools and colleges, setting up of key govt offices in the district, repair of dilapidated roads, and early completion of two bridges under construction over the Dikhow river.“Charaideo has been neglected in infrastructure development. Roads are in poor condition, govt offices are not fully functional and people lack basic facilities,” Bora said.Aasu submitted a memorandum to Charaideo DC Neha Yadav, seeking time-bound action on the demands.
