Six Kolkata Scientists Get Patent From Centre For Electrical Leak-Check device

Kolkata: The Centre has granted patent to a real-time electrical leakage monitoring device, invented by six Kolkata researchers to prevent electrocution in urban waterlogged areas. This device, when attached to lampposts on streets, detects electrical leakage in areas with accumulated water and sends alerts, besides facilitating automated power isolation. This technology promises crucial protection during monsoon waterlogging, reducing chances of electrocution. This device can save lives with timely warnings through SMS, sound, or light alerts. The researchers, include Sayan Tripathi and Jhilam Jana, assistant professors at IEM, Arijit Dhali, an MTech student at Jadavpur University (JU), Prabuddha Bikas Chatterjee, a private engineering college alumnus, JU professors Jaydeb Bhaumik and Chinmoy Ghorai. The device, ‘Electrocution Detection and Alert System (EDAS),’ has been granted the patent this month. The system comprises peripheral units equipped with electrically-isolated sensing modules to detect leakage caused by faulty earthing or exposed conductive surfaces. These units transmit hazard data wirelessly to a central control unit.Upon detecting danger, the central system automatically actuates relays to shut off power in affected zones while triggering local visual and audible alarms.Simultaneously, it sends remote notifications through a communication module. Sayan Tripathi said, “It demonstrates how research-driven engineering can be translated into practical technological solutions addressing real-world safety challenges.” The researchers had conducted trials last year in Jadavpur. The research was conducted over the past three years.
