72-yr-old lives in fear after ‘eviction threat’

Kolkata: A senior citizen residing as a tenant in Behala has approached the police alleging a series of calculated intimidations, forced break-ins, and persistent attempts by unknown elements to dislodge her from her residence outside of legal due process.According to the complaint , the victim, Gita Chowthani (72), has been in peaceful possession of her tenanted premises for a considerable period. An active tenancy dispute and an ejectment proceeding are currently sub judice before the court. Despite regularly depositing her rent through court channels up to Aug this year, the septuagenarian has claimed that she has lately been facing severe safety and privacy violations. The complainant stated that late at night from late Sept, a group of 12 to 15 unknown individuals allegedly descended upon the residential premises. The intruders not only forcibly damaged and broke the locks of the main gate but also smashed the lock of an adjacent, long-sealed room kept locked to preserve her privacy. Shouting threats and warnings, the miscreants allegedly attempted to terrorise the elderly resident, warning her of dire consequences if she refused to vacate the premises. She also expressed deep apprehension over suspicious, heavy foot traffic in the upper residential portions of the building, where 20 to 25 unidentified individuals frequently came during evening and night hours under the guise of tenancy. Taking cognisance of the matter, the police have been urged to secure local CCTV footage, identify the intruders, and initiate immediate preventive measures. Given her advanced age, local civic and police networks have also been called upon to extend protective security assistance under senior citizen welfare protocols while investigations proceed.
