Guwahati: Before his first birthday, an Assam baby overlooked because of his disability has found hope in a new family in Spain.A Spanish couple formally adopted the child at a ceremony in Amingaon, Kamrup district, on Monday, completing a year-long legal and regulatory process. The child turns one on Tuesday.The adoption was completed under the Juvenile Justice Act and Adoption Regulations, 2022. The district administration, District Child Protection Unit and Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA), Boko, jointly organised the adoption ceremony at Kamrup DC’s office.“Normally, a legally free child — ready for adoption — is quickly adopted. However, in this case, the boy being specially abled was a hurdle. However, the couple from Spain, father Cesar Tauste Martinez and mother Maria Josefa Solves Royo, have set an example,” Moonmoon S Neog, district child protection officer, Kamrup, told TOI.Kamrup deputy commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra presided over the ceremony in the presence of District Legal Services Authority secretary Sharif Uddin Ahmed Pathan, additional deputy commissioner Geetashri Lachit and ASP Punnam Pegu.Mishra said the adoption process would strengthen ties between India and Spain, particularly between Kamrup and Spain. He thanked the agencies involved and Dilip Kumar, representative of Spain’s authorised foreign adoption agency and translator, for facilitating communication.The adoptive parents expressed gratitude to the authorities for their support. SAA will celebrate the child’s birthday with the family before they leave for Spain.Child Welfare Committee, Kamrup, declared the child legally free for adoption on Oct 31, 2025. The couple reserved his profile on Feb 27, 2026, and Central Adoption Resource Authority issued its no-objection certificate on March 27.Represented by SAA Boko through a power of attorney, Kamrup district magistrate issued the adoption order on May 7, 2026. The child’s birth certificate and passport were subsequently completed before Monday’s handover.
