Guwahati: Jeep safari will remain closed from May 25 at the Kaziranga National Park as the monsoon season is fast approaching in the state, officials said.Officials said elephant safari in the park has already been stopped for the season.“The elephant and jeep safaris will resume once the monsoon is over by Oct-Nov,” an official said. The park has become the most prestigious destination in the state over the years and this status was substantiated by the unprecedented surge in visitor footfall at the Unesco heritage site, which experienced a phenomenal quadruple increase during the recently concluded financial year.Park director Sonali Ghosh said the records from 2016-17 to 2025-26 show an encouraging increase in tourist flow to the heritage site. “The total visitors have increased more than three times in the last 10 years, with a 4.5% increase in foreign tourists in the 2025-26 financial year compared to 2016-17,” she added.Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, recognised as India’s seventh Unesco World Heritage Site, is globally renowned for its rich biodiversity and its famed “Big Five” wildlife species — the greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, wild buffalo and eastern swamp deer.Spread across the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Biswanath, the protected landscape comprises three forest divisions — Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (Bokakhat), Biswanath Wildlife Division (Biswanath Chariali) and Nagaon Wildlife Division.
