Chandigarh: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will transform healthcare by enhancing doctors’ capabilities, improving efficiency and supporting better clinical decisions, Banaras Hindu University vice-chancellor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi said at PGIMER’s 63rd Foundation Day celebrations Monday.Delivering the Foundation Day lecture on “AI in Healthcare”, Chaturvedi said AI should be seen as an enabler, not a replacement for doctors.“The most successful healthcare deployments today are not examples of AI replacing doctors. They are examples of AI helping doctors perform at their best,” he said.Calling PGIMER a “true national asset”, he praised its contributions to healthcare, medical education, research and innovation.Chaturvedi said AI had moved beyond being a technological novelty and was now making deep inroads into healthcare, research and decision-making. He highlighted its potential in medical research, remote healthcare, radiology, hospital management and evidence-based care.However, he cautioned that AI models trained largely on western datasets may not adequately reflect Indian disease patterns and clinical realities. India, he said, must move beyond being a consumer of healthcare AI and develop solutions tailored to its own needs.
