Uruguay's pink socks carry cancer message
Uruguay’s move was part of a campaign against breast cancer

Kolkata: For the first time in its 126-year history, the Uruguay national football team turned up wearing pink socks for its international friendly against India at the Salt Lake stadium here on Tuesday. The move was part of a campaign against breast cancer and was designed to take the message of prevention into every home: the earlier it is detected, the greater the chances of effective treatment.“In every stadium stand, every family, and every group of friends, breast cancer is closer than we think,” the Uruguay football association said on Tuesday. “In Uruguay, football is much more than a game: it is identity, a way to connect, and one of the most far-reaching voices in the country. Few things bring Uruguayans together like the national team. When La Celeste plays, the whole country watches, whether at home, at work, in a bar, or in the stands.”Uruguay has enjoyed its greatest sporting successes on the football field, winning two Olympics and two World Cups, including the famous one in 1950 when they upset hosts Brazil in what has now come to be known as the Maracanazo.
