Chandigarh: Haryana Police have intensified its technology-driven crackdown on cybercrime, misinformation, and illegal online activities, with its social media monitoring and URL blocking teams removing 16,308 objectionable or illegal online content between Jan and July 2026.DGP Ajay Singhal said the changing nature of crime had made technology an increasingly important tool for law enforcement. “The priority is to use technology to stay one step ahead of criminals,” he said.The teams are keeping a continuous watch on social media platforms and online channels to detect and act against phishing links, fake websites, fraudulent applications, misleading advertisements, fake profiles, and other unlawful digital content.The police are also monitoring content that could disturb public order, create confusion or threaten social harmony.A specialised ‘Online Crimes Against Women and Children Unit’ is monitoring objectionable and illegal content targeting women and children.The cyber teams are also conducting daily surveillance of posts, videos, links and profiles containing misinformation or provocative content. Notices are issued to social media platforms under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act seeking removal of such material.SP Mayank Gupta said the campaign aimed at creating a safe and trustworthy digital environment and urged citizens to verify information before sharing suspicious content.Singhal also cautioned citizens against fake investment and trading apps, which lure victims with promises of quick and high returns. He advised people to verify the credibility of apps, links, and websites before making financial transactions.Citizens facing cyber fraud have been urged to immediately contact Cyber Helpline 1930 or lodge complaints through the national cybercrime portal to facilitate timely freezing of defrauded funds and action against perpetrators.
