Ahmedabad: A woman trying to sneak in a gold chain weighing 499.5g without declaring or paying the customs duty, was nabbed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport. Officers from the customs department’s Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) said the 24-carat gold chain worth Rs 83 lakh has been seized and further probe is on.‘Based on passenger profiling, AIU officers intercepted a female passenger who arrived at Ahmedabad from Sharjah on Sunday. Upon examination, the passenger was found to be concealing a gold chain inside her high-neck sweater. The gold chain, weighing 499.5g and of 24 KT purity, was recovered from her possession,’ a release by the department stated.While the chain was seized, the passenger was released on bail. Sources said that the woman is a medical professional in the Gulf and did her graduate and postgraduate studies from Gujarat. “Prima facie, it seems to be a case of wilful non-declaration of the gold article. However, probe is on to get more details and understand circumstances and evidence,” said an officer.
