Amritsar: Punjab BJP spokesperson Sarchand Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to induct the party’s new Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh into the Union Cabinet, saying that he is an experienced strategist with a deep understanding of the state’s social, political, and border-related issues.Sarchand said Chugh had earned a significant position within the BJP’s national structure already. “Rising from the rank of a party worker, he now serves as BJP national general secretary and has handled key organisational responsibilities in several states, including the politically sensitive Jammu and Kashmir as the BJP’s incharge for the state,” Sarchand said. Sarchand added that Chugh’s elevation to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh had further strengthened his standing within the party.Even as Sarchand cited Chugh’s rising stature within BJP, he has not done too well electorally. In the 2012 Punjab assembly elections, he contested from Amritsar Central and lost by 17,231 votes. Five years later, in the 2017 assembly elections, the margin was 16,682 votes. In spite of this, the party entrusted Chugh with larger organisational assignments.Sarchand said Chugh had consistently highlighted Punjab’s composite heritage, Hindu-Sikh harmony and concerns of border residents, making him a potential bridge between the state and the Centre.
