Ahmedabad: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) seems to be in an expansion mode. The top B-school is all set to acquire a 21,707-square-metre (5.4-acre) land plot in Vastrapur from Ahmedabad Education Society (AES).The AES, registered as a trust, owns an open land parcel in Vastrapur—plot no 18 in TP scheme 31—measuring 26,707 square metres. The trust has applied to sell 21,707 square metres of the total land to IIM Ahmedabad for Rs 378 crore.A public notice issued by the charity commissioner office recently invited objections with regard to sale of the said land parcel located opposite the new IIM-A campus, beside the Blind People’s Association (BPA).An email sent to IIM-A officials seeking a response on the acquisition and plans for the land did not receive a reply until Monday evening. Sources however said the land is being acquired for expansion of the B-school campus.Sources cited growing student numbers and new programmes as key drivers. “The flagship PGP programme has expanded from 255 students in 2006 to 408 in 2025, a rise of 60%. Likewise, the PGP-X programme rose from 90 to 158 seats in the same period. The intake for PGP-FABM has largely remained unchanged. But in the same period, a slew of new programmes have been introduced in both residential and hybrid mode – the latest one is blended PGP in business analytics and AI last year,” said an industry observer. “Thus, there is a growing need for accommodating students and staff as majority courses are residential”IIM-A’s ‘new campus’ across the 132-feet ring road became operational in 2009. In recent years, the institute has undertaken major infrastructure projects, including construction of the JSW School of Public Policy, a new academic block, and a new building for IIMAVentures. The land used for these projects had earlier hosted the Sattvik food festival and other activities. The proposed land parcel, located opposite the new campus, is expected to help expand the institute’s footprint with academic and residential buildings, sources said. Campus expansion has also been discussed as part of planning for alternate student residences during proposed repairs and renovation of the heritage campus designed by iconic architect Louis Kahn, sources added.
