Jaipur: Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) filed a public interest litigation in Rajasthan High Court Tuesday, urging the appointment of a regular superintendent of police (SP) in Nagaur ahead of upcoming municipal and panchayat elections. RLP argued that maintaining the current vacancy and assigning the role to an additional SP may compromise the integrity of the electoral process.The petition challenges an Aug 19 order from the department of personnel (DoP) appointing an additional SP to oversee Nagaur, following the transfer of SP Roshan Meena on May 19. RLP contended that this temporary arrangement was made without the State Election Commission’s approval, which, in a July 21 order, highlighted the crucial roles of district collectors and SPs in facilitating free and fair elections.RLP further asserts that the current appointee is a state-cadre officer, while the district SP should be from the Central Police Service cadre, raising concerns about potential political influence. It referenced news reports of police actions against political and social activists in Nagaur, suggesting a threat to a level playing field in the elections.The party is seeking the court to quash the Aug 19 order and expedite the appointment of a regular SP from the IPS cadre, while also requesting a stay on the DoP order pending the outcome of the litigation.
