Mohali: A 35-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death at her residence in Dashmesh Nagar, Zirakpur, on Tuesday, with police suspecting her former husband of carrying out the attack. The accused allegedly stabbed the woman following an argument before fleeing the scene.The deceased has been identified as Poonam, a native of Bhiwali in Rajasthan who was living in Zirakpur with her second husband, Rishi Raj.According to Rishi Raj’s complaint, the incident occurred around 9.15am. He told police that Poonam had just come out of the bathroom when her former husband, Ved Prakash Pathak, and his brother, Bablu, allegedly entered the house.Rishi Raj alleged that the two had frequently harassed Poonam and her family in the past. An argument reportedly broke out soon after they entered the house. When he intervened to stop the dispute, the two allegedly assaulted him.He further alleged that during the altercation, Pathak attacked Poonam with a knife, stabbing her multiple times.Police said the woman sustained several stab injuries and died on the spot before any medical assistance could be provided.Investigating officer Harvinder Singh Jatana said the police control room received information in the morning about a woman being attacked at a house in Zirakpur.“Senior police officials and investigation teams immediately reached the spot. The woman, identified as Poonam, had suffered multiple injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon and was found dead at the scene,” he said.Preliminary investigations have centred suspicion on the woman’s former husband. Police said Poonam had been living with Rishi for the past two-and-a-half years, while her former husband reportedly continued to visit her.A forensic team was called to the scene to collect evidence. The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for a post-mortem examination.Raids underway to nab accusedThe accused remains absconding after allegedly fleeing the house following the attack. Police teams have launched raids at multiple locations to trace Ved Prakash Pathak. Investigators are also examining the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation and gathering evidence to establish the sequence of events.
