Chennai: Following the declaration of NEET re-exam results and completion of admissions in IITs and NITs, as many as 5,726 students (15%) of 37,976 skipped the first round of engineering counselling this year. Students who got cut-off marks from 171.3 to 200 were allowed to take part in the first round of online general counselling that began on July 20.According to the first-round results released by Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) committee, only 32,250 students selected choices to take part in the counselling, meaning the rest of the students opted out of the counselling process.TNEA officials said the percentage of students skipping the first round is similar to previous years.

“Medical aspirants confident of getting an MBBS seat after the NEET re-exam results might have opted out. Many others might have taken admissions in NITs and IITs,” an official said.On Sunday, TNEA issued allotment orders to 28,550 students and the remaining 3,700 students did not take the seats allotted to them.“Some students might have given wrong choice order or they did not prefer the college or course,” career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi said.Experts expect more admissions to the core engineering courses this year compared to previous year.As many as 8,016 students who opted for upward movement were given tentative allotment orders, and they should visit the TNEA facilitation centres to give certificates and pay the tuition fees to confirm the allotment and to become eligible for upward movement. The remaining 17,034 with provisional allotment orders must report to the college concerned and complete the admission process by July 30.“The seats not reported at the TNEA facilitation centres and not joined in colleges will be pooled, and the allotment given to the students will be cancelled by default. The seats will be allotted to the students who are waiting for upward movement,” TNEA said.
