Young hearts recover fully after MIS-C battle: PGI study
A prospective observational follow-up study published in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal by Drs Suresh Kumar Angurana, Salu Mahato, Nidhi Chauhan and others evaluated 51 MIS-C survivors between Nov 2024 and Sept 2025

Chandigarh: Nearly three to five years after surviving multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a rare but life-threatening condition following COVID exposure, children treated at the PGI have shown near-complete recovery in heart health, physical development and mental well-being.A prospective observational follow-up study published in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal by Drs Suresh Kumar Angurana, Salu Mahato, Nidhi Chauhan and others evaluated 51 MIS-C survivors between Nov 2024 and Sept 2025. These children, aged between 1 month and 12 years old (with a typical age of 7 years), had been hospitalized for MIS-C during the height of the pandemic between Sept 2020 and Aug 2022.During their initial emergency hospital stays, the children faced severe body-wide illness. Every single patient suffered from persistent fever. Additionally, 65% experienced severe digestive issues like vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain; about 51% developed breathing troubles; and 49% suffered skin rashes, eye redness, or mouth sores. Rare but severe complications included severe eye bleeding in 4% of cases and tissue damage in the fingers or toes in 2%. Blood tests at admission confirmed massive internal inflammation, with 71% showing high inflammatory proteins, 72.5% displaying stress markers in the heart, 68.6% having elevated blood-clotting markers, 47% having low platelet counts, 39% having low white blood cell counts, and 49% showing liver inflammation.The initial impact on the heart was severe: 47% of the children suffered from heart muscle weakness, and 22% developed swollen or abnormal coronary arteries, including one child who developed a massive, dangerous blood vessel enlargement. Nearly half (49%) required treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit, 45% needed blood-pressure-supporting medication for circulatory shock, and 16% were placed on mechanical breathing machines. To survive the acute phase, 90% received strong steroid medications, 88% received specialized immune-system therapies (intravenous immunoglobulin), 87% were prescribed aspirin, and 6% required blood thinners. While 160 total patients were treated during that two-year period, 6 children (4%) died from the acute illness.To understand the long-term impact on the 154 survivors, researchers tracked 51 of these children over a follow-up period ranging from 32 to 56 months (averaging about 44 months or nearly 4 years post-discharge). The average age of the children at follow-up was 11 years, with boys making up 65% of the group. The group of 51 children studied was medically representative of the overall 154 survivors, sharing nearly identical initial symptom severity, hospital treatments, and lab results.The long-term findings revealed that the heart muscle strength fully normalized in 100% of the children. The average heart pumping efficiency jumped from an unhealthy 55% during acute illness to a healthy 62% at follow-up.Blood vessel swelling completely healed in most patients. Only 12% (6 children) retained mild blood vessel enlargement, and only 1 child continued to carry the same giant vessel enlargement present since their initial illness.Following discharge, only 8% (4 children) visited a hospital for fever, and only 6% (3 children) required a temporary hospital stay, all due to an unrelated bout of dengue fever. None suffered from lingering long-COVID symptoms such as chronic fatigue or joint pain. Specialized psychological assessments revealed no symptoms of anxiety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder, despite the severe trauma of their initial intensive care hospitalizations.As many as 98% of the children were actively attending school, with 88% earning top academic marks (92% receiving A grades and 8% receiving B grades). The researchers emphasized that while MIS-C causes severe organ distress and dangerous inflammation initially, the long-term outlook is exceptionally bright. With proper acute hospital treatment, children recover their heart health, mental stability, and normal development without lingering disabilities.
