‘VIP’ car grounded after 5-km chase in Panchkula

Panchkula: A red-blue beacon meant to announce “VIP” status instead caught the eye of the wrong person, Panchkula’s DCP (crime & traffic), triggering a five-km chase that ended with the car being impounded and its driver handed a Rs 30,000 challan.Around 8.30 pm on Tuesday, DCP Amrinder Singh was passing through the Sector 14 market in his official vehicle when he spotted a car flashing an unauthorised red-blue light and sporting a temporary registration number. Two youths were inside.The officer signalled the driver to stop, but instead of pulling over, he allegedly stepped on the accelerator and sped through the market and adjoining residential areas.The DCP gave chase.After following the car for nearly five kilometres, Singh managed to stop it near Sector 15. The SHO of the City Traffic Police Station was called to the spot and, after checking the vehicle, police issued challans totalling Rs 30,000 for various traffic violations.The car was impounded and taken to the Sector 14 police station.“Panchkula Police is taking strict action against vehicles violating traffic rules and using unauthorised red-blue lights, sirens, black films, illegal stickers and other prohibited items,” Singh said.Police said that, on the directions of police commissioner Pankaj Nain, officers have been keeping a close watch on traffic violations to ensure safe and disciplined movement on city roads.
