Guwahati: Assam Police have arrested five people, including two women, in Jorhat district for allegedly honey-trapping people through social media and extorting money from them, officials said.The arrested accused have been identified as Moromi Das Neog, alleged to be the mastermind behind the racket, Baby Bora, her husband Ankit Bora, Sanjib Das and Ankit Paul.During the investigation, police also recovered screenshots of financial transactions and obscene clips from the accused’s mobile phones, suggesting that they may have been part of a larger racket.“A case has been registered at Jorhat PS, and they have been forwarded to the local court,” said Hrishikesh Hazarika, officer-in-charge of Jorhat PS.The case came to light last Friday after a bank manager from Tinsukia, employed with a private bank, approached the police and filed a complaint, the OC said.“The bank manager had come in contact with the woman through Instagram around July. After their initial interaction, their friendship gradually became closer and eventually developed into a relationship. Later, in Aug, the woman invited the man to meet her. He came here in Jorhat at night and met her around 1 am. The woman took him to a rented house, reportedly located near Seuni Ali area. They spent some time together and had an intimate encounter,” he said.Police also said, according to the victim’s complaint, both Sanjib and Ankit Paul were already present and recorded the incident. They subsequently demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh, threatening to circulate the video on social media if the amount was not paid. “Following the encounter, the gang demanded another Rs 5 lakh from him. Unable to arrange the money and feeling helpless, he finally approached us for help. That was when we stepped in, registered the complaint and began investigating the matter,” he added.
