Silchar: For its commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and green campus initiatives, Assam University has ranked 11th in the National Green University Ranking 2026, earning a Gold Rating.The ranking, released by Unesco -recognised environmental organisation Green Mentors, awarded the central university 92.9 out of 100 across 10 sustainability parameters.These included biodiversity conservation and campus greening, carbon and climate action, sustainable infrastructure, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, environmental governance and community engagement. The assessment framework aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Unesco ’s Greening Higher Education Framework.Assam University was among a select group of higher education institutions awarded a Gold Rating.The university has also been invited to the 10th NYC Green School Conference 2026 in New York this Sept, where it will be honoured alongside institutions from around the world.Registrar Dr Pradosh Kiran Nath said the recognition reflected efforts by faculty, non-teaching staff, researchers and students to build an environmentally sustainable campus.He said environmental stewardship remained a core priority alongside academic excellence and that the recognition would encourage stronger sustainability initiatives.National Institute of Technology Calicut topped the ranking. Assam University’s performance was among the best by a higher education institution from the northeast this year.
