Nigerian arrested with MDMA outside nightclub

Gurgaon: A Nigerian man was arrested with nearly 14 grams of a substance believed to be MDMA near a club in Silokhra village on Saturday night, police said.The accused, Okake Friday alias Richard, was apprehended by a team of Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) near the parking area of Ebowla Club Byob after an informer told police Friday had been involved in the illegal sale of the drug for some time and he would come to the club on Saturday.“The informer also provided information about the motorcycle allegedly being used by him and said he would arrive near the club carrying the drug in a backpack,” the FIR filed at the Sector 40 police station read.The police team reached the parking area and started surveillance. A local man, Sunil, was also included in the raiding team as a witness.“Around 9.25pm, a man arrived on a black Splendor motorcycle. The informer identified him as Friday,” a police officer said.The team searched the man and his backpack. A plastic pouch containing a substance suspected to be MDMA was found inside. The substance weighed 13.72 grams along with the pouch, according to the seizure proceedings.Police said the accused could not produce an identity card or any licence or permit for possessing the substance. “The suspected MDMA was sealed in a parcel and taken into possession along with the backpack and motorcycle,” the officer added.He has been charged with Sections 22(C) (contravention with commercial quantity) and 61 (confiscation of any goods used to conceal illegal drugs, psychotropic substances, or controlled substances) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.Police are also examining how he sourced the drug and who he was going to deliver it to.Meanwhile, a 47-year-old Nigerian national lodged in Bhondsi jail in a narcotics case died at a govt hospital after his health deteriorated on Saturday.The deceased, Alex Tochukwu Osuji, had been lodged in District Jail Bhondsi since 2024.According to police, Osuji was HIV positive and had been suffering from fever, reduced food intake, breathing difficulty and other health-related problems for the past few days.“His condition deteriorated during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, following which he was shifted to Government Hospital in Sector 10 for treatment. He died during treatment,” a police spokesperson said.A board was constituted to probe the incident under the supervision of a magistrate and necessary proceedings were initiated in accordance with law. The body was kept at the Gurgaon mortuary.Police said that they have also informed the Nigerian embassy about Osuji’s death.
