Babysitter falls 10 floors to death, kin allege sexual harassment by employer

Noida: A day after a 20-year-old woman working as a babysitter died after falling from the 10th floor of a Sector 137 high-rise on Friday night, her family has alleged she was sexually harassed by her employer and has demanded a fair investigation into her death. No case was registered till late Sunday evening, police said.The victim, a resident of Amroha in UP, who was living in Sector 168, had worked as a babysitter for the past three years at a house in Gulshan Vivante, Sector 137. Her employer works at an IT firm.In his complaint, the victim’s father alleged that she had told her family her employer touched her inappropriately three to four times in the past. She complained to the employer’s wife and left the job, but rejoined after the wife insisted she return and because she was emotionally attached to their daughter.According to the father, the victim took Friday off to meet her sister but returned to work around 1.30pm. Around 8.30pm, the family received a call from police informing them she had died by suicide.The father alleged the police misled the family when they reached the spot, initially claiming she had been rushed to a hospital and denying them entry into the society. The family said they later learnt her body was being shifted, and were subsequently informed it had been taken for postmortem in Sector 94. The family said they suspect foul play behind her death.Following the incident, the family staged a protest at the scene. After two days of counselling by police, they took the body to their hometown in Amroha, where her last rites were conducted on Sunday morning.Central Noida ACP Rajeev Kumar Gupta said initial investigation pointed to suicide, but police were probing the reason behind it, including checking call detail records. “We will also be questioning the victim’s employer and his wife,” he said.Gupta said no case had been registered till Sunday evening as the family’s statements were yet to be recorded. “After the statements, action will be taken,” he said.
