Aizawl: A district administration medical team led by a medical officer was dispatched to Darnamtlang village, about 6 km west of Lawngtlai town in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, after a 53-year-old man died and seven others fell ill in a localised outbreak of suspected gastroenteritis, district health officials said on Saturday.Officials said Zeria (53) died of suspected diarrhoea/gastroenteritis in June, triggering panic in the village. Four patients have been admitted to Bungtlang South Primary Health Centre (PHC).“While cholera was initially suspected, outbreak of cholera was ruled out due to the symptoms of the patients,” Lawngtlai district Senior Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte said.Jongte said the team is keeping close watch on the situation, medicines have been sent to the village, and steps have been taken to send samples for laboratory tests in Aizawl.Darnamtlang has 115 households and a population of around 540 and falls under Bungtlang South PHC.Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga appealed to residents not to panic, saying medical officers are working to prevent further spread. The district had reported a cholera outbreak last November and December in border areas adjoining Myanmar and Bangladesh and in neighbouring Siaha district, in which 10 people died—eight in Lawngtlai and two in Siaha—linked to infections among people involved in border trade with Myanmar.
