Ghaziabad: A home guard and a sub-inspector died in two separate road accidents in the city on Wednesday night and in the early hours of Thursday. Five people, including three police personnel, were injured in the incidents.The first accident occurred around 11.15pm on Wednesday at Rahul Vihar underpass on NH-9, under Crossings Republik police station limits.Home guard Kapil Kumar (40) and constable Praveen Kumar (35) were on a police response vehicle (PRV) headed from Noida Sector 63 to an event in Gaur City-II in Greater Noida West, when an allegedly speeding Thar coming from the opposite direction rammed into their bike head-on.The accused was identified as Sonu Gandhi (34) a businessman, who police said was drunk and returning home after a party in Noida. He was arrested and his car seized.Wave City ACP Priyashri Pal said Kapil and Praveen were taken to a private hospital, where Kapil died during treatment. Praveen, a resident of Noonakheda village on Shamli Road in Muzaffarnagar, sustained injuries to his leg and head and remains under treatment. Kapil, a resident of Hapur, was wearing a helmet that broke on impact. His body has been sent for a medical examination.Based on a complaint by the injured constable, police registered an FIR against the Thar’s driver under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (causing death by negligence), 125B (endangering life or personal safety of others), and 324(4) (mischief causing damage).The second accident took place around 5am on Thursday near Bikaner building at Lal Kuan on Delhi-Meerut Expressway, when a Maruti Swift collided with a canter attempting a U-turn.

The car carrying a police team from Aligarh’s Madarak police station was bringing back a 20-year-old who had gone missing. Sub-inspector Upendra Kumar, head constable Narendra, recruit constable Ritik along with Ashu and his father Satyendra (45) were travelling from Delhi to Aligarh via Meerut.Kotwali ACP Upasana Pandey said the canter driver had overshot the cut for the Lal Kuan underpass by about 50 metres and took a U-turn on the expressway itself, at which point the vehicle coming from the Delhi side struck the car. All five were seriously injured and admitted to a district hospital, where Upendra died during treatment.Ritik, whose condition remains critical, was referred to Yashoda Hospital in Kaushambi. The other injured were referred to GTB Hospital, Delhi. The canter driver fled after abandoning it and police have taken the vehicle into custody.Aligarh SSP Neeraj Jadaun told TOI that Ashu, who is addicted to online gaming, had gone missing from home five days ago, prompting his parents to file a missing-person complaint. After Ashu switched on his phone on Wednesday and was traced, the team travelled to Delhi with Ashu’s father. Jadaun said a complaint will be filed to register an FIR.
