Kolkata: Police suspect that the same gang may be behind the murders of two app-cab drivers in and around Kolkata within one week.Cab driver Bhagwan Prasad Gupta was on Wednesday found dead inside his locked vehicle on D C Dey Road in Entally. He was strangled and his legs were tied up, police said. His cash, gold jewellery and phone were reportedly missing. A similar murder was reported on Monday, when cab driver Ramjas Kauri was found dead near Badua Mor on Delhi Road in Dankuni. He was also strangled and his legs were tied up, police said. His vehicle was later found abandoned in the Park Street-Mallikbazar area.During the investigation, police found several similarities in the two cases. Both the drivers were from the Madhyamgram-airport area, both were robbed before being killed, and in both the cases, the accused used fake SIM cards and destroyed their phones to hide their tracks. CCTV footage showed three young men in both the cases. In the Dankuni case, a woman was also seen with them. Police believe the suspects might have posed as passengers and boarded the cabs near the airport or Madhyamgram.Investigators suspect Gupta was taken towards Kalyani Expressway, robbed and killed after he resisted. His car was later driven to Entally and parked near a broken CCTV camera, suggesting the gang knew the area. They also believe at least one gang member may be local but they have not ruled out criminals from outside Bengal. The motive is still unclear because the killers did not steal the vehicles. Police teams are checking CCTV footage, toll plaza videos, and mobile tower data to identify the suspects.
