Vasai: An elderly man from Virar West was allegedly duped of Rs 6 lakh by cyber fraudsters who contacted him on the pretext of verifying his details under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.The 71-year-old complainant, a resident of Agashi in Virar West, received a call from an unknown mobile number on Wednesday afternoon. The caller told him that the SIR verification process was underway and that his name did not match that of his father in the records.The caller then sent him a link and asked him to transfer Rs 5 to correct the discrepancy. The complainant followed the instructions and made the payment. However, the fraudster claimed that the transaction had failed and asked him to download a third-party application.After downloading the application, the complainant entered his bank details as instructed. Within a short time, Rs 6 lakh was siphoned off from his bank account.Following the incident, the complainant approached Bolinj police station in Virar, where a case of fraud was registered against an unidentified person.This is reportedly the first cyber fraud case in the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate involving the SIR pretext.
