Chandigarh: A 26-year-old man wanted by Punjab Police in multiple criminal cases was arrested by Chandigarh Police near a park in Sector 46 and allegedly found in possession of two pistols and 11 live cartridges.The accused, identified as Manpreet Singh alias Sonu alias Baggal, a resident of Ferozepur, was allegedly on his way to meet his girlfriend at a park in Sector 46 when he was apprehended, police said.According to police, Manpreet was wanted in a case registered at Mamdot police station in Ferozepur and has been named in several cases in Punjab, including those related to attempted murder, illegal arms, narcotics, robbery, kidnapping and assault.Police said that on Monday night, a team led by head constable Manwinder Singh was patrolling near the dividing road of Sectors 46-A and 46-B when it noticed a man walking from the Sector 46-D side. On spotting the police team, he allegedly turned around and tried to leave the area, arousing suspicion.The police team chased and apprehended him. During his search, a .30-bore pistol and four live cartridges were allegedly recovered. As he failed to produce a valid licence for the weapon, a case under the Arms Act was registered at Sector 34 police station and he was arrested.During two days of police remand, Manpreet allegedly disclosed the location of another .30-bore pistol. Acting on his information, police recovered the second weapon along with seven live cartridges, taking the total recovery to two pistols and 11 cartridges.Police said the accused also revealed alleged links with several notorious criminals, including Ashish Chopra, Shishu Sher Khan, Ashok Kumar alias Ashoka and Laddi Ferozepur. The nature and extent of these alleged connections are being verified, cops added.Police records show that several criminal cases were registered against Manpreet at different police stations in Punjab between 2018 and 2024. These include cases under the Arms Act and NDPS Act, besides alleged offences involving attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping and assault. Further investigation is underway.College passout held with Glock pistolChandigarh Police arrested a Faridkot resident with an Austria-made 9mm Glock pistol outside SD College, Sector 32, on Tuesday night.The accused, identified as Armanpreet Singh, suggested that he had allegedly come to the area to sell the pistol, cops said after preliminary investigation. Police claimed chats recovered from his mobile phone indicated a deal worth around Rs 2.5 lakh.According to police, Armanpreet completed his studies at SD College in 2024. A police team led by Sector 34 SHO Shadi Lal was patrolling the Sector 32-D market around 8.30pm when it received information about a man moving suspiciously in a Ford Endeavour (PB-22-B-0003) outside SD College in Sector 32-C. The vehicle was also reported to have tinted windows.Acting on the tip-off, police reached the spot and attempted to stop the SUV. On seeing the police, the driver allegedly tried to reverse the vehicle and flee, but the SUV stalled. He then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot before being caught by the police team.During the search, police recovered the 9mm Glock pistol from his possession. The weapon’s magazine was found empty. A case under the Arms Act was registered and the accused was arrested.Police said an examination of Armanpreet’s mobile phone revealed chats allegedly linked to the purchase and sale of illegal weapons. Investigators suspect he was in touch with both the supplier and the intended buyer and had come to deliver the pistol as part of a deal valued at about Rs 2.5 lakh.Police are now trying to trace the alleged supplier and the intended recipient of the weapon. Investigation teams have been dispatched to Punjab. On Wednesday, the accused was produced before a local court, which granted police one-day remand for further interrogation.History-sheeter held with pistolChandigarh: The operations cell of Chandigarh Police arrested a history-sheeter and allegedly seized a country-made pistol from him during intensified checking ahead of Independence Day.Police identified the accused as Shahid Khan alias Mulla, a resident of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran. He was arrested on August 7 by a team led by Inspector Jaspal Singh, Administrative Officer, Operations Cell, acting on a tip-off.A case under Section 25(1-B)(a) of the Arms Act was registered at Sector 26 police station. Police said the recovery was made during enhanced checking and search operations being conducted across the city in view of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. During investigation, police found that Shahid was a habitual offender and had been named in eight criminal cases registered in Punjab and Haryana.
