Guwahati: Torrential rain flooded several parts of Guwahati on Monday as IMD forecast heavy rainfall across the northeast over the next week.The rain exposed the city’s chronic urban flooding problem, with key roads and neighbourhoods inundated within hours. Ambari, Chandmari, Gauhati Club and other vital corridors were affected, while Six-Mile and Hatigaon in east Guwahati faced severe waterlogging. Several stretches of NH-27 bypass near Garchuk were also flooded.Jorabat, a key gateway linking Guwahati with Meghalaya and upper and central Assam, was inundated again, disrupting traffic.Residents said the crisis showed little improvement since last year despite repeated assurances and Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s claims that clogged drains were a major cause of the flooding.Waterlogging on NH-27 near Zubeen Kshetra, the cremation site of singer Zubeen Garg at Sonapur, also triggered traffic snarls and raised concerns over drainage along the region’s key transport corridor.Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura on Tuesday. IMD has warned that rain will continue across several northeastern states for at least four days.A senior IMD official attributed the rainfall to increased moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal.According to an IMD release, fairly widespread to widespread rain is likely in Arunachal till Aug 26 and on Aug 29-30. Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive such rainfall on Aug 24 and from Aug 27 to 30.
