Agartala: A committee of senior police officers will be formed to investigate the death of Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar, following public scrutiny and demands for transparency. Dhankar was found hanging in his washroom in the police headquarters here a day before.During a media briefing on Tuesday, newly appointed DGP GS Rao said the probe will strictly follow legal procedures, and a team of senior officers will examine all aspects of the case.Tripura governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, chief minister Manik Saha, ministers and senior officials paid their respects at the state secretariat, where Dhankar’s remains were taken. CM Manik Saha said Dhankar’s death is an irreparable loss to Tripura Police and the state administration, and said the investigation will be conducted in line with legal standards.Dhankar’s remains were transported to his native village in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday for last rites. His family is awaiting his son’s arrival from Canada.The committee’s formation comes amid questions over the circumstances of Dhankar’s death, including untraced mobile phones and the absence of a Special Investigation Team so far, despite opposition parties’ demands for an independent inquiry.Director of State Forensic Laboratory Dr HK Pratihari said initial findings include recovery of a dupatta believed to be used by Dhankar to hang himself, that there was no ceiling fan in the washroom attached to the DGP’s office, indicating a metal rod may have been used.
