Guwahati: A joint security team arrested Nongthombam Jamesjit, the suspected key figure in an interstate narcotics network, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in connection with the seizure of 8,320 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in Manipur, police said on Wednesday.Jamesjit, proprietor of Kangla Drugs & Surgical Pharmacy at Naoremthong Bazar in Imphal West, was arrested in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, police said. A Manipur police team has secured four days’ transit remand to bring him back to the state for further investigation.According to Manipur Police, the investigation followed the registration of an FIR at Porompat police station after three people were arrested with contraband items on Oct 4. Police said Jamesjit, also known as Thoi, emerged as the suspected key figure in the network.“A four-day transit remand has been obtained for bringing him to Manipur for further investigation,” Manipur Police said in a social media post on Wednesday.Based on information provided by one of the people arrested earlier, a joint team of Manipur Police, central security forces and YADAM searched the Oinam Thingel riverbank and recovered a concealed stock of 8,320 bottles of CHOCO+ cough syrup, police said.The seizure comprised 52 boxes, with 160 bottles in each box. Each bottle contained 10 mg of codeine phosphate, according to police.Codeine-based medicines are regulated in India and may be sold or dispensed only in accordance with applicable prescription and regulatory requirements.Further investigation is under way, police said.
