Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has issued an orange alert following a weather advisory from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Bengaluru.According to the forecast, the alert will remain in effect from 1pm on June 30 to 8.30am on July 2, with heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of 30–40kmph expected across the district. Anticipating adverse weather conditions, the administration has already put pre-monsoon preparedness measures in place. A District Emergency Operations Centre has been activated at the deputy commissioner’s office. Residents can stay updated through the district administration’s official social media handles and local newspapers, where round-the-clock weather updates will be provided.Authorities have issued a series of safety advisories. Fishermen have been strictly instructed not to venture into the sea during the alert period. The public, especially children, have been advised to avoid low-lying areas, lakes, riverbanks and coastal zones. Tourists have also been warned against entering water bodies or the sea under any circumstances.Farmers have been urged to suspend agricultural activities during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Residents and workers have been advised to remain indoors and seek shelter in safe buildings during severe weather. Standing near trees, electric poles or damaged power lines should be strictly avoided.People have also been cautioned against taking shelter under weak structures or old trees. Residents living in low-lying areas or structurally unsafe houses have been advised to move to safer locations. If necessary, they should shift to designated relief centres identified by the respective tahsildars.Special caution has been advised in rural areas while crossing culverts and small bridges, which may become hazardous due to rising water levels.
