Mohali: The Mohali municipal corporation has decided to renovate all local resource management centres (RMCs) into fully enclosed structures and install CCTV surveillance to prevent littering. Announcing the decision during the newly elected corporation’s first House meeting on Friday, Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana also secured approval for the scientific disposal of waste across all facilities.MLA Kulwant Singh, who participated in the proceedings after remaining absent from municipal meetings for nearly five years, stated that the upgrades will eliminate garbage spillages outside collection facilities. A central monitoring system has already been established at the Phase 7 control room to track the camera feeds and identify individuals illegally dumping waste outside designated areas to improve sanitation standards.Addressing development anxieties in municipal areas recently transferred from the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) to the civic body, Kulwant Singh promised uninterrupted progress. He assured the House that the MC will initially fund these pending neighbourhood infrastructure projects and subsequently recover the expenditures from GMADA, stating, “Development works in the wards represented by elected councillors will continue without interruption.”The House also unanimously passed a resolution authorising Mayor Samana to constitute both the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) and the Town Vending Committee. This followed a floor debate initiated by Congress councillor Narpinder Singh Rangi, who demanded adequate representation for the opposition within the F&CC to maintain administrative balance.Other municipal proposals approved during the session included appointing dedicated nodal officers for all city parks, deploying separate male and female cleaning staff at public toilets, and providing compassionate employment to eligible dependents of deceased municipal workers in accordance with government regulations.Elected councillors also raised several localised grievances, highlighting public space encroachments in Sohana, garbage accumulation outside the Shahi Majra RMC, an incomplete road stretch in Phase 5, an illegal meat market operating in Balongi, land disputes surrounding the Sohana pond, and clarity on development works in Aerocity. The session also addressed the rising stray animal problem and demanded strict safety inspections of local paying guest (PG) accommodations.
