Kolkata: Amidst the World Cup fever that has gripped the state, the football community in Manipur was left in a state of shock following the sudden demise of former player and current Neroca FC coach Gift Raikhan at age of 45 on Monday. The man who guided Neroca to the I-League 2nd Division title in 2017, earning them promotion to the top tier, was a prominent figure not just in his home state of Manipur but also in neighbouring states like Mizoram, where he was handed the reins of then I-League champions Aizawl FC.“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the demise of our head coach, Gift Raikhan. His dedication, leadership, and passion for the game inspired us all. From promotion glory to fearless fights, you made us proud to wear these colours. Though you are gone from the touchline, your legacy still chants in our stands,” Neroca said in a statement.Born in Mapao Zingtun and belonging to the Tangkhul community, Raikhan dedicated himself to coaching and youth development, shaping the football journeys of many youngsters in the region. His contribution to the game, in fact, surpassed the boundaries of the football-crazy northeast. He guided the Pune FC academy team to the U-20 I-League title in 2012 and was a vital cog in the club’s youth setup after retiring as a player in 2007 and joining Pune FC’s coaching staff.“Deeply saddened by the demise of Gift Raikhan, AFC ‘A’ Licence football coach and distinguished footballer who contributed immensely to the growth of football in Manipur as both a player and coach,” Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh wrote in a social media post. “His dedication to nurturing young talents and promoting the sport will always be remembered.”An adept left-back in his playing days, Raikhan represented top-tier clubs such as Churchill Brothers FC and Pune FC. However, his greatest contribution to the game came from the touchline.“The club mourns the loss of Gift Raikhan, a valued former player and a true servant of the game,” Churchill Brothers said in a statement. “Manipur has always held a special place in our hearts, and Gift played a vital role in nurturing and giving chances to many young, aspiring footballers. His impact will be remembered far beyond the pitch. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.”
