Man jumps into Noida drain after spat with wife, body found after 8-hour search

Noida: The body of a 29-year-old man, who jumped into a drain near Sector 81 Metro station on Wednesday after an argument with his wife over his drinking habits, was recovered after an 8-hour-long search operation by teams of the fire department, police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).The deceased, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lived with his family in Harola in Sector 5. His family said he was addicted to alcohol and even underwent rehabilitation for it some time ago, but had relapsed. The couple had frequent fights over this issue, they added.On Wednesday, the couple had gone to Sector 81 to visit his aunt. On the way back, he allegedly expressed his desire to drink again, after which an argument broke out between the couple. He then picked up a brick from the roadside and struck his wife. Afterwards, the man became upset and jumped into the drain with the intention of ending his life, his wife told police.According to an official, the nearly five-foot-deep drain has barricades placed around it but the spot from which the man jumped was under construction and the barricades had been removed.The search teams began the operation late on Wednesday. The man’s body was found at 6am on Thursday.ADCP (Noida) Abhay Kumar Mishra said police subsequently completed the inquest proceedings and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and further questioning family members, he said. An officer said no details suggesting foul play have emerged so far.
