Chennai: A man, Jai alias Babu, of Theni district, key accused in a cyber slavery and overseas employment fraud racket, was arrested at Bengaluru International Airport after arriving from Malaysia, said TN police on Friday.Jai had been residing in Malaysia, and was intercepted by Thanjavur CB-CID police after a lookout circular was issued against him. Jai acted as a key recruitment agent who coordinated with operatives in Cambodia and sold the victims to cyber scam compounds in Pavet, Cambodia. The case stems from a complaint lodged in 2014 by Thanjavur resident Vettrivel, who was among the victims rescued from Cambodia after being lured abroad with promises of lucrative call centre jobs.Investigators found that the first accused, Sundararajulu, who was arrested in Oct 2024, had recruited six persons from Thanjavur by offering well-paid jobs in Cambodia, collected several lakhs of rupees from five of them and arranged their travel through Jai.The victims were forced to carry out online investment scams by convincing people to invest through fake Bitcoin investment applications. Their passports were confiscated, preventing them from leaving the compounds, and they were reportedly subjected to physical and mental abuse if they refused to participate in the job.
