New Delhi: Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the process of examining the feasibility of a major road corridor along Najafgarh drain, inviting consultants to study the possibility of developing elevated and at-grade—built at ground level—road infrastructure between Dhansa Border and Wazirabad.The proposed study will assess traffic movement, road geometry, land and utility requirements, and evaluate different development options before preparing an integrated transit corridor and street network plan.As part of the exercise, the consultant will undertake reconnaissance, traffic and preliminary topographical surveys and prepare three conceptual proposals covering key features such as lane configuration, intersections, junctions and service roads. The study will also examine utility shifting requirements, environmental and forest clearances, tentative project costs and land acquisition needs before determining the corridor’s overall feasibility.A detailed traffic assessment will be conducted, covering all categories of vehicles, pedestrians and non-motorised transport users. The consultant will carry out 24-hour traffic counts, turning-movement surveys at junctions and origin-destination studies to assess travel patterns along the corridor.Speed and delay surveys will also be undertaken to identify measures for improving traffic flow, enhancing road safety and segregating local traffic from through traffic. Parking surveys, along with an assessment of the existing signalling system, road markings and signage, will form part of the study.PWD has also sought a detailed road inventory, including existing intersections, central verge openings and footpaths. A Total Station survey will map the proposed corridor and adjoining streets, including building footprints and access points.The consultant will be required to factor in existing and proposed infrastructure projects of agencies such as DMRC, NHAI, DDA, PWD and Railways, besides identifying utilities, monuments, green areas and other constraints that may influence the project.Based on the findings, an Integrated Transit Corridor Development Plan will be prepared, including geometric designs, network connectivity proposals around metro stations and mass transit corridors, and measures for multimodal integration. Parking plans for the corridor and areas within an approximately 800-metre radius will also be developed.The move comes amid renewed efforts to improve connectivity along Najafgarh drain. Earlier proposals had examined an elevated or at-grade road between Kakrola Mor and Wazirabad. The latest exercise aims to determine the corridor’s feasibility and infrastructure requirements before any final decision is taken.
