Ludhiana: Residents of Ludhiana East constituency held a protest on Sunday evening against a proposal to shift an animal carcass processing and disposal plant from Noorpur village to the garbage dump site in Jamalpur.Protesters claimed that the municipal administration plans to establish the carcass processing plant on nearly two acres inside the existing Jamalpur garbage dump premises. They expressed concerns that the facility would generate foul odours, release harmful gases, and cause environmental pollution in a densely populated area.Residents highlighted that the proposed site violates Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) guidelines regarding mandatory distance from residential areas.

They noted that several schools, temples, gurdwaras, and Christian and Muslim graveyards are located close to the site, urging authorities to evaluate the project’s social, religious, and public health impacts.Former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon, who joined the demonstration, pledged to continue the agitation until the government officially scraps the proposal. “We need to challenge this decision for our children and coming generations as the carcass plant is not suitable in a thickly populated area that is why people in Noorpur showed resentment against this plant,” Dhillon said, adding that protests would intensify if the decision is not reversed.Dismissing the agitation, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ludhiana East, Daljit Singh Grewal, stated that the protests were politically motivated and denied any administrative plan to shift the facility to the area. “These protests are politically motivated and there is no such planning for this constituency and I have personally written a letter to the CM Bhagwant Mann in April month not to shift any carcass plant here,” Grewal said.
