Guwahati: Five Assam FIRs over NEET-UG 2026 protests are set to be quashed following a Supreme Court order on Tuesday.Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the quashing of FIRs linked to NEET-UG 2026 protests held from July 20 to 25.A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, invoked Article 142 to direct that cases related to student agitations during the period be quashed.Five Assam FIRs will therefore not be pursued. Assam had sought their quashing, saying it no longer wished to investigate them following Centre’s July 25 commitment to withdraw cases against protesters if the agitation was called off.The court said FIRs registered elsewhere during the period, including those not placed before it, should not be investigated and must be closed.The order came after Cockroach Janta Party leader Saurav Das informed the bench that the party had withdrawn its proposed Sept 5 protest march following assurances from Centre on withdrawing FIRs and compensating victims.The court allowed Delhi Police to register a fresh FIR against 2,873 people, without prejudice to their rights, citing their alleged grave criminal antecedents.Bihar, Maharashtra and West Bengal had sought quashing of 116 FIRs — 69, 34 and eight, respectively.
