Kolkata: Kolkata Police has started buying new counter-surveillance, bomb disposal, and explosive detection equipment worth more than Rs 4.4 crore.The force has issued tenders for 12 Non-Linear Junction Detectors worth about Rs 2.4 crore and nine portable Explosive Vapour Detectors worth nearly Rs 2 crore.The Non-Linear Junction Detectors will help police find hidden electronic devices such as micro-transmitters, voice recorders, hidden cameras, mobile SIM cards, and IED circuits. These detectors can identify electronic parts even if the device is switched off or inactive.The detectors must be lightweight, waterproof, and made from non-corrosive materials like carbon fibre or aluminium. They should detect objects underground, underwater, and on ground surfaces. They must also help protect against radio-controlled IED activation.The Explosive Vapour Detectors will be used to improve VVIP security at important places and transit points. These handheld devices can detect explosives such as C4, TNT, dynamite, PETN, Semtex, RDX, ANFO, and TATP, as well as narcotics. They can give results within seven seconds through visual and audio alerts.Lalbazar is also considering buying bomb blankets, fibre-optic scopes, night vision monoculars, and electronic stethoscopes. These tools will help bomb squads inspect suspicious objects, work in low light, and detect timing devices.The procurement follows a recent review of security arrangements at key installations in Kolkata. The state govt had asked Lalbazar to submit a list of equipment needed for modernisation and to bring Kolkata Police closer to the standards of forces such as Delhi Police.
