New Delhi: A counterfeit currency network that printed and supplied fake Rs 500 notes and spread over four states was busted by Delhi Police Tuesday. The suspects were arrested from Delhi and Bihar, possessing 169 fake notes worth Rs 84,500.The investigation began after a complaint from Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Gandhi Nagar branch regarding 18 counterfeit notes deposited by a customer, Nafis Ahmed. During the enquiry, Ahmed revealed that one Danish had purchased clothes from his shop worth Rs 17,200 and had paid with fake notes to tender Rs 9,000. He was arrested from Gandhi Nagar market following CCTV analysis.“Our investigation revealed the involvement of Jharkhand resident Guddu, from whom Danish had allegedly procured counterfeit currency worth Rs 30,000 against Rs 10,000 in real currency. An inter-state operation was launched, and Guddu was arrested from Bodh Gaya with the counterfeit notes,” said DCP Milind Mahadeo Dumbere.Guddu revealed that he had purchased Rs 1,50,000 worth of fake notes for Rs 60,000 from West Bengal, allegedly from a man named Mama.Investigation is under way to trace the source of the counterfeit currency, identify other members of the network, establish the supply chain and ascertain the extent of circulation.
