'He is my lover': UP sexual exploitation survivor demands marriage with accused; drinks phenyl in police station

GORAKHPUR: A sexual exploitation case took a serious turn when the survivor allegedly consumed phenyl inside a police station after demanding marriage with the arrested accused, whom she described as her “lover”, police said on Sunday.According to police, the woman’s condition is stable.A resident of Deoria district, the woman arrived at the police station on Saturday and insisted that she would marry only her “lover”, Dhananjay Nishad, aged around 23, who is currently lodged in jail. Shortly after, she allegedly consumed phenyl from a bottle she was carrying in her bag and collapsed, police told PTI.Women police personnel rushed her to the Chauri Chaura Community Health Centre.

After primary treatment, doctors referred her to the district hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable and out of danger. Family members later reached the hospital.The incident has drawn attention as the woman herself had filed an FIR against Nishad on July 23, accusing him of sexually exploiting her for three years on the promise of marriage. She alleged that when she insisted on marriage, he refused, citing differences in their communities.Acting on her complaint, police arrested the accused on Saturday and he was sent to jail.Superintendent of police (North) Gyanendra Nath Prasad said the accused was arrested following due legal procedure, and the woman was provided immediate medical assistance after the incident.
