Ghaziabad: A new sewage treatment plant (STP) is set to come up in Loni by 2028 as part of efforts to prevent untreated sewage and industrial wastewater from entering the Yamuna. The Ghaziabad Jal Nigam, in collaboration with the Centre’s Namami Gange programme, has prepared a detailed project report for the project, which has been given a three-year timeline for completion.Officials said the proposed STP will intercept untreated domestic sewage and wastewater generated by industrial units in Indrapuri, Banthala and Lal Bagh before it reaches the Yamuna. At present, much of the wastewater from these industrial clusters is discharged into the Shahdara drain, one of the major drains carrying pollutants into the river.According to officials, the project follows directions issued by Supreme Court, National Green Tribunal and ministry of home affairs, which have called for stricter measures to curb pollution in the Yamuna.Regional officer of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (Ghaziabad) Ankit Singh said, “Once operational, the facility will ensure that wastewater is treated before being discharged or reused, significantly reducing the pollution load entering the river.”Officials said the treated water will be reused for watering plants and maintaining green spaces across the city, reducing dependence on freshwater resources.Meanwhile, the pollution control board is continuing its sealing drive against illegal industries across the city to curb the discharge of untreated industrial waste. Authorities said the proposed STP is expected to strengthen the city’s sewage management system while contributing to long-term efforts to restore the Yamuna’s health.
