Discover the many moods of freedom in Bengaluru this weekend

This Independence Day weekend, Bengaluru is opening up spaces across the city to celebrate the country through history, culture, music, art and food. From a first-of-its-kind public celebration at Vidhana Soudha and the annual Lalbagh Flower Show to cyclists tracing the map of India and a cantonment-inspired brunch, August 15 and 16 offer plenty of ways to mark the occasion.A people’s Independence Day at Vidhana SoudhaFor the first time, the Vidhana Soudha premises and Ambedkar Veedhi will open to the public for a large-scale Independence Day celebration as part of Freedom Habba. Described as a “people’s Independence Day”, the event aims to go beyond the traditional flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades, bringing citizens together through art, culture and community participation.“The idea really was to go beyond this and celebrate it as a people’s day, using art and culture as the medium and getting people and the community involved,” says V Ravichandar, cultural evangelist and a volunteer at the Freedom Habba. He says the larger aim is to encourage civic pride and a stronger sense of connection with the city. The day will feature representations from 10 to 12 Indian states, regional communities and local folk artists from Karnataka. Folk forms such as Dollu Kunitha and Yakshagana will also take the stage. A flea market with around 120 stalls will showcase crafts, artisans and food.Children will be at the heart of the celebrations, with Makkala Mela featuring activity stalls and exhibitions on the Constitution, nationalism, India’s independence and Karnataka’s role in the freedom movement. Trained young guides will also take children on tours of Vidhana Soudha, including the Assembly Hall. The evening will feature performances by musicians including Raghu Dixit, Sanjith Hegde and Varijashree Venugopal on the central steps of Vidhana Soudha. But Ravichandar says the music is only one part of the larger celebration. “The focus of the day is a family day out,” he says.Freedom, on foot and on two wheelsFor those who would rather celebrate Independence Day on the move, two events offer different takes on the idea of freedom. The Liberty Run 2026 on August 16 will feature 2.5K, 5K and 10K runs, turning the spirit of Independence Day into a fitness-focused morning. The event also supports education for children from underserved communities, giving the run a social purpose alongside its patriotic theme. On August 15, cyclists can take part in the India Map GPS Art Ride, organised by the Bengaluru Cycling Club. The free group ride covers around 77-78 km, starting and ending at Vidhana Soudha and passing through Yeshwanthpur, Nagarabhavi, Uttarahalli and Jayanagar. The route is designed to create the shape of India on participants’ GPS tracking apps.A weekend of musicMusic takes centre stage on August 16 with the Sanjog Sangeet Mahotsav at Prestige Centre for Performing Arts. The afternoon programme features flute, vocal and tabla ensembles, while the evening brings together Pt Pravin Godkhindi and the Krishna Fusion Band, featuring singer Vijay Prakash.A taste of freedomThe Independence Day mood also reaches the dining table at The Leela Bhartiya City Bengaluru, where Quattro is hosting Cantonment Chronicles, a special brunch inspired by life in India’s armed forces. The menu brings together traditional Indian flavours and continental dishes, accompanied by Independence Day-themed décor and activities. “There will be tri-coloured desserts and activities for children at the table. Sketch artists and live music will also add to the experience,” says Phulba, food and beverage executive at the hotel.
