Dhubri: District BJP functionaries on Tuesday defended the Election Commission and EVMs, rejecting opposition parties’ allegations.The BJP’s Dhubri district unit addressed the media at its headquarters amid controversy over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) functioning and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.Opposition parties have raised concerns over the revision and demanded action against chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.Dhubri district BJP president Ranjit Kumar Ray accused the opposition of creating confusion by questioning constitutional institutions and the electoral process.“The allegations being made against CEC, ECI and EVMs are baseless and are aimed at creating unnecessary doubts in the minds of the people,” Ray said.He said ECI was responsible for conducting free and fair elections and urged political parties to respect constitutional procedures.“If there are genuine concerns, they should be raised through the appropriate constitutional and legal forums. Making unsubstantiated allegations before the public can create confusion and weaken faith in democratic institutions,” he said.Dhubri Municipal Board chairperson Dr Debamoy Sanyal and district vice-president Debaprasad Singh also criticised the opposition.The leaders cited ECI’s clarification that internal notes and differing views are normal in a multi-member body, while formal decisions follow its institutional process. They also defended EVM reliability.
