Amritsar: Amritsar police have busted two cross-border networks supplying heroin and illegal firearms ahead of Independence Day, arresting seven people and recovering 10 pistols, 1 kg heroin, five cartridges and a drone.On Monday, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, in a post on X, stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were in contact with foreign-based smugglers who were allegedly facilitating the movement of drugs and weapons across the border.Two FIRs have been registered at Cantonment and D-Division police stations.Police said further investigation would focus on establishing the further links and identifying the foreign-based handlers and tracing other members of the network.Significantly, the arrests came as DGP reviewed the security preparedness of Amritsar Commissionerate and Border Range, with particular emphasis on border districts ahead of Independence Day.During the meeting, security arrangements at sensitive border locations, major public gathering points, key urban areas and vital installations were reviewed. Officers were directed to maintain heightened vigilance, intensify preventive measures, strengthen patrolling and surveillance, and ensure effective crowd management.
