Cop attacked in Gurdaspur, sister injured; FIR to be registered

Gurdaspur: A Punjab Police constable was allegedly attacked in uniform by a group of youths at Babbehali Adda in Gurdaspur district, leaving him and his sister injured. Police said a preliminary probe pointed to an old rivalry, while sources linked the attack to his alleged sharing of information on drug peddlers.The injured constable, Karanpreet Singh, is posted at Dinanagar and had been deployed at the Babbehali Chhinj fair. Police said the incident occurred after he completed his duty and was leaving the area with his sister. Both were taken to Civil Hospital.Police officer Shahbaz Singh said the constable was returning from duty when a scuffle broke out at Babbehali Adda. “The preliminary investigations suggest an old rivalry behind the incident,” he said, adding that the exact circumstances would emerge during the probe.He said an FIR would be registered and appropriate action taken against those found responsible.Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu attacked the AAP govt over the incident, alleging the constable had spoken out against drug smugglers and was brutally attacked, suffering fractures to both legs. “The protectors themselves are unsafe,” Bittu said, questioning the govt’s claims of curbing drugs and maintaining law and order.virrana@gmail.com
