Gurgaon: A 34-year-old construction worker was found dead inside a lift shaft at an under-construction building in Sector 93 on Wednesday morning, two days after joining work at the site. Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and are verifying the circumstances of his death.The deceased, identified as Prabhakar, a resident of Bijnor, had come to the site through a contractor and was staying on the fifth floor of the building, identified as 99A. He was sleeping at the site and was found dead by another worker in the lift shaft the next morning. He had an injury on his forehead. A total of three workers were at the site at the time.Police said initial information suggested Prabhakar had fallen from the fifth floor, though the facts were still being verified. “The postmortem of the deceased has been undertaken and the body has been handed over to the family for last rites,” a police officer said.A team from the Sector 93 police post is investigating the case. Investigators are questioning people associated with the construction work to determine whether anyone witnessed the incident or knew of Prabhakar’s movements beforehand. The body was sent for a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death and establish whether the injuries were consistent with a fall from the fifth floor.Prabhakar’s family has alleged negligence on the part of the builder and sought an investigation into the circumstances of his death. Police said they are examining whether adequate safety measures had been in place around the lift shaft and other hazardous areas, and that further action would depend on the findings of the investigation and postmortem report.
